CINCINNATI (AP) - A 3-month-old giraffe that was the first born at the Cincinnati Zoo in more than 25 years has been euthanized after suffering a debilitating leg injury. The zoo says the female giraffe named Zuri was found limping with the injured right rear leg on May 19 and had been re-casted three times since. The animal was euthanized Friday after zoo veterinarians determined the leg bone had become severely fragmented with no hope for recovery.
Pandora Bracelet Charms Zoo Executive Director Thane Maynard says staff are heartbroken and that the death is the most "tremendous blow" he's experienced in 34 years working with animals. The zoo suffered another giraffe death in November, when a 3-year-old female's cardiovascular system collapsed from shock when her horns became caught in netting in an outdoor exhibit.
