Schulman: My thoughts

Schulman: My thoughts on the Giants moving forward There is an odd coincidence at play in the immediate aftermath of the Buster Posey injury. The Giants are in Milwaukee to start a three-game series against the Brewers tomorrow night. It was here, last July, a few days after Posey was named the everyday catcher, that his Rookie of the Year campaign and the Giants' championship run took off.

tiffany ringsPosey went 9-for-16 with four homers and nine RBIs in the four games at Miller Park. Posey would hit .417 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in the month, with a ridiculous 1.165 OPS. Not coincidentally, the Giants finished July 20-8. All of this came to mind as I drove into Milwaukee tonight. Something else came to mind, an aphorism that I have heard many managers and players say over the years. There's a lot of truth to it, too.

tiffany outlet"Nobody is going to feel sorry for us." So, if the Giants were emotional about Posey's severe injury and wallowed in it today, that's understandable. Now, the time for wallowing is over. This is not my opinion alone. I'm sure Bruce Bochy will convey the same message before the Giants begin a three-game series against a team that is riding a nine-game home winning streak, just as San Francisco was until Florida arrived. The Giants remain a first-place team, despite their three-game sweep at the hands of Florida, though their lead has been trimmed to 1.5 games over, no, not Colorado, but the 26-24 Arizona Diamondbacks. The Giants' pitching remains strong. Freddy Sanchez is still hitting the tar out of the ball. Aubrey Huff has it within him to be a force in the lineup. Cody Ross can get hot as the dickens. Pablo Sandoval might be less than two weeks away. Then, there is Brandon Belt.

tiffany earringsNobody should expect him to be the Posey of last July. That is too much pressure. But it's time to see if he can help the team consistently. A little more than 24 hours ago, Bochy said Belt was a longshot to be called up. Posey's injury changed everything. Belt was the one guy at Fresno with the potential to be a middle-order hitter. He has to play. Whether Bochy will sit Nate Schierholtz and give Belt the starts remains to be seen. Talk of acquiring a catcher has begun. My friend Ken Rosenthal at Foxsports.com has reported the Giants inquired about the Nationals' Pudge Rodriguez. But I wonder if that's a fit. He is not an everyday catcher anymore. Nor did he have a great reputation behind the dish to begin with. No, Eli Whiteside is not an offensive catcher, but if others in the lineup start producing as they should, the Giants can make due with a guy like Whiteside, who has the complete respect of a tough pitching staff to catch. Chris Stewart might be the prototypical "Four-A" player, but he still impressed the staff with his

hitting and catching during spring training -- another solid 6-year free-agent signing by Bobby Evans and his team. tiffany braceletThere would be an interesting irony if the Giants did get Pudge. He has been a pest to the Giants, and his signature moment against them was holding onto a throw from left fielder Jeff Conine despite a ferocious collision with J.T. Snow to end a 2003 Division Series. The last thing the Giants (and their fans) should do is panic and give up on the season. Does Posey's absence make the road harder? Yes. Does it kill their chances to win the National League West? No. We shall see what we shall see. Great matchup tonight between Tim Lincecum and Shaun Marcum. Nobody outside of San Francisco will pity this team, so the Giants should not pity themselves. They just need to have fun and play ball. tiffany necklace
